Finally back to reading LotR so you all get to hear my thoughts again
I’ve been really appreciating Gandalf this re-read; I always liked him well enough but I don’t know if he ever stood out to me as much. Given the legacy he’s left in popular culture especially, I think it’s easy to see him as much more of a caricature, when really he has some of the most stirring compassion of any of the characters in the entire series.
I remember being really taken with the reasoning he offered Frodo when explaining why he couldn’t just take the Ring for him (“Yet the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity, pity for weakness and the desire of strength to do good”), because the idea that he’s corruptible entirely because his desire to help people is so great is really interesting (and also pretty fascinating characterization for a character who is, essentially, a powerful immortal sent to Middle Earth to help others!), but getting to the Council and his account of what occurred between him and Saruman really highlights it as well. The fact that Saruman, who is so selective in what he chooses to see as power, still considers Gandalf significant enough to have a place in his designs, whereas Gandalf (who though he refers to Saruman as the greatest of his order certainly by the end of the series has proven to be just as or more powerful) holds such a faith in the deeds of others who one might deem weaker makes them really fantastic foils. The way they talk about Radagast highlights it – Gandalf clearly takes into account that the other wizard is a bit scattered, but still praises him for his qualities, whereas Saruman holds nothing but insults for him in their exchange.
Obviously the way Gandalf treats all the Fellowship members really highlights this as well, and collecting all the lines of his where he praises someone for quiet strength or abilities based in something like friendship or courage instead of overt power would be an endeavor. But that whole bit got me thinking on it again, and just how much I appreciate that Gandalf’s defining characteristics are really all sort of rooted in seeing and encouraging strength in unusual places, and value in bonds with others, and a having a desire to do good but in a way that includes others and their potential in his plans. He’s powerful, but kind, and I love that his kindness is the line that keeps him on the side of the heroes instead of the villains, even though he’s savvy enough to recognize it could be used against him
